Confession time: I hate cooking. The grocery shopping, the chopping, the cleaning, the worrying if I’m going to kill everyone with botulism… just no.
I love the idea of cooking; in fact I have a vast collection of cookbooks that I add to every so often. I’ve almost never made anything out of them – I like the idea that I could make something, if I wanted, but honestly I probably never will.
However, I’m a huge sucker for any game that has a cooking mini game or profession. I’ve maxed out cooking in World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2… I just love it. I was obsessed with Cafe World on Facebook (when that was still a thing) and love cooking idle games.
So, when a came across a couple of game-themed cookbooks, it was absolutely necessary that I add them to my never-used cookbook collection.
Here are 8 amazing game-themed cookbooks!
8. Hearthstone Innkeeper’s Tavern Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel
This is a really beautiful little cookbook, featuring fun tavern food and drinks. Many of the recipes are quite simple (good for a cooking noob like me) and fast. I can practically hear the sounds of the Hearthstone tavern in the background while flipping through it’s full-color pages and geeking out over the fun Blizzard-universe lore.
7. The Final Fantasy XV Cookbook by Honey and Toast, a.k.a Tsubasa
This astonishing (and astonishingly free) fan-made ode to all the recipes in Final Fantasy XV is a masterpiece. This labor of love was created by Hong Kong chef Tsubasa, and features every recipe from the game carefully recreated to match the game’s visual rendering of the meal. The fact that each recipe came from the brain of a very talented chef doesn’t hurt, either.
6. Hyrule: Taste of the Wild by SHATTERED-EARTH, milkbun, Bryan Connor, et. al.
This absolutely adorable fan-made mock cooking magazine features reproductions of recipes from Breath of the Wild, along with “articles” by game characters like Paya, Link, Zelda and more. With 12 recipes to explore, and tons of beautiful artwork, this slim volume would make a wonderful addition to any gamer’s collection.
5. The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel
Chelsea Monroe-Cassel is something of a niche author, bringing tons of fan food to life with her variety of cookbooks. Her newest, due in March 2019, centers around the vast Elder Scrolls universe. I can’t tell you how excited I am for this one! So much of the Elder Scrolls lore focuses around food, especially Elder Scrolls Online where I am a rabid recipe collector. If this book is anything like her other beautiful titles, it’s sure to be a winner. Now give me my sweet roll!
4. The Stardew Valley Cookbook by stardewvalleyrecipes on Tumblr
Here’s another incredible fan-made entry for one of my favorite games, Stardew Valley. This (free!) cookbook is still an active work in progress, and you can follow along the journey via his Tumblr blog. I’ve linked to the PDF download post above, but the rest of the blog is deffo worth checking out because other fans post their own versions of his recipes as well. While not the most professional-looking (who cares) cookbook, the charm here is undeniable, the recipes are very well written step-by-step with pictures, and the food all looks super delicious.
3. The Geeky Chef Cookbook by Cassandra Reeder
This cookbook is a fun mish-mash of all things geeky, but offers some really solid video game recipes, like the Sea Salt Ice Cream from Kingdom Hearts (pictured above). If you are a general geek like me, you’ll enjoy the entries from Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Neil Gaiman, and more as well. Reeder also has a website if you want to see what else she’s cookin’ up.
2. Fallout: The Vault Dweller’s Official Cookbook by Victoria Rosenthal
I can tell you with absolute honesty that I have NEVER wanted to eat any of the food I found in the Fallout Series. Slurpin’ on some mirelurk or crunchin’ on some rad roach legs sounded absolutely revolting – until now! I’m so freakin’ excited about both the upcoming Fallout 76, and this awesome cookbook. All the series favorites seem to be included: from the (pictured) Blamco Mac & Cheese to Braised Deathclaw Belly. The look of this book is on point as well. This title should blast all us vault-dwellers right into a gastronomic mushroom cloud.
1. World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel
It’s probably no surprise that I’m a huge Blizzard fangirl, since I profess my love for MMO’s often. World of Warcraft has been my game of choice for over 10 years, and I’ve amassed loads of WoW-themed goodies over the years. My favorite entry in this list by far has to be World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook.
I seriously have a major crush on this book. I often flip through it’s pages just for funsies, to bask in the glow of it’s awesome artwork and it’s lore entries. I’ve actually gone so far as to buy the ingredients for some of the recipes in here! Of course they all went bad cuz I never made them, but the fact that I even planned to should tell you how awesome this book is.
There are hundreds of beautiful pages of WoW-inspired recipes here for you to drool over, each one with simple ingredients and techniques so even the noobiest home-chef can follow along. I can’t recommend this one enough.
Hopefully you’ve found a couple of new recipe books to try here! Do you have a favorite game-themed cookbook that should be mentioned? Tell me all about it in the comments!
